When life hands you lemons...

...make lemon fairy cakes with lemon glacé icing. ^_^

Here are the proceeds of yesterday afternoon's sojourn in the kitchen...

The recipe was for 24 cakes, but: (a) I had a limited amount of butter; (b) I only have 2 bun trays (= 12 cakes); (c) I no longer have a cake tin large enough to accommodate 24 finished cakes... hence, I made half the recipe: 12 cakes! :-)  Above: fresh from the oven and smelling wonderful. ^_^  Waiting to be iced once cool...

And now, iced...

...as was the world. ^_^  This was the view from the kitchen window, just after I finished decorating the cakes.  The snow and the icing matched one another rather well!

Ah, baking... how can it not cheer you up?!  (Hmm, I suppose if you are on a miserable diet or have allergies etc. ... :-\)  Anyway, for the rest of us it is quite the best way to spend a cold afternoon when tradesmen have let you down, the fire didn't want to light despite several brave attempts (hooray for central heating instead!), you are down in the dumps and making the place look untidy with your moping and procrastination.  Baking may be a displacement activity for less appealing chores, but it is sort of useful and at least puts a smile on your (and your husband's!) face! :-D

'Tis pity they are so moreish... the poor things are already dwindling.  I guess that's why the recipe is for 24 - because half of them disappear in a matter of hours if you only bake 12!?  Well, that's an excuse for more baking, I guess...

Ok, time to make a cup of tea for the carpenter (he turned up today!).  Have a good day, LJers! :-)

They look great!

That's a lovely view, too.

Thanks! ^_^ They turned out to be v. idiotproof and tasty... :-)

I'm very fond of that view. Although 90% of people tend to feel obliged to say something 'humorous' about how quiet the neighbours must be... XD

Mm, yes, lemons + sugar = delicious! :-)

My favourite take on that saying is "When life hands you potatoes, make vodka." XD

Ah, palm trees... some people would probably envy you! But I have to admit, I prefer a colder climate myself...

Roses: wonderful things! :-) Our garden is mostly weeds 'n' brambles currently, but I hope one day there will be actual plants... roses will be a must. ^_^

It's pretty much compulsory to give tea to workmen in the UK - they don't function well without it! Actually, it turns out this one has brought a Thermos so I haven't had to make him anything so far... ;-)

Oh, I love David Austin roses! My Mum used to have lots of them in the garden at our old house. There were also lots of 'proper' old roses - some of them unidentifiably old. (Tight double blooms, deep mauve-red, fragrant, lots of thorns.) My favourite ones (that I can remember the names of...) are Sombreuil, Zepherine Drouhin and Albertine. ^_^ And if you have roses, you have to have clematis too! :-)

Hmm, I guess the best compromise for refreshing the worldwide workforce could be iced tea! ;-P

I agree, baking is a great way to spend a cold day.

I also like the view from your window, although it would definitely have spooked me as a kid! ;)

Hehe, I guess it would put some people off. But old graves are alright - sort of friendly. It's the new shiny ones where people actually come to grieve and leave flowers that I'm not keen on. Luckily those ones are all at the other end of the churchyard!

Eavesdrop, snoop, and sigh with yearning...

This journal is not a private diary, it is more like an occasional, imaginary column. Therefore, much of it is on public display. However, if you want to read my occasional attempts at creative writing, my Caution Elf tells me I should only show that stuff to my friends. You know what to do. :-)

NB: If you add me in an unsolicited fashion, please introduce yourself. Otherwise I will probably ignore you.
