Festivity?

Hmm, I don't really feel festive yet, despite having gone Christmas shopping on Saturday.  Usually, buying wrapping paper does the trick, and I did pick up some lovely paper from the card shop, but maybe it's still a bit too early?  I expect I shall feel festive at last when I write the labels to go on the presents. :-)

Anyway, today I decided to do something totally festive, something I've never done before (at least, not on my own and not since I was a child) - I made mince pies! :-)

I didn't make the mincemeat (a jar of Tesco's Finest had to suffice) but I did make the pastry.  I can't remember the last time I made pastry - and pastry-making has had this little cloud hanging over it (in my mind, that is!) for years.  "It's too tricky, it'll turn out leaden and inedible, arghh, no, don't do it..." >_<

Well, that's just silly, really, and with plenty of time on my hands I decided to have a go at last.

Here they are, my experimental creations...  I think I put a bit too much mincemeat in them, and the oven temperature and cooking time in the recipe I sort-of used turned out to be rather... excessive, so there were a few leaks here and there! ^_^   Some of them weren't too easy to get out of the tin... >_<

...I had to eat the most collapsed one, of course! :-D

All in all I think they weren't bad for a first attempt - I have a feeling I could have used less liquid in the pastry, and although the recipe said 'roll out the pastry as thinly as possible', I could maybe have got away with a bit less rolling.  The pastry isn't hard, but it's not as short as my Mum's. :-)  Oh well, practice makes perfect, so I guess I'll have to make an apple pie or something in the not-too-distant future...

Ok, now back to the pressing matter of deciding what to make for dinner tonight...

Your pastry looks very good. Was the recipe hard?

Thanks! :-) No, it was easy - 6 oz plain flour, 3 oz butter, 2 oz icing sugar, plus some beaten egg and a little milk to bring the dough together. This was kind of a combination of a couple of different recipes, though, and I'd probably tweak it next time - only 1 oz icing sugar maybe as it's quite sweet, and I'd be more careful about the amount of liquid.

They taste nice, though, and I'm encouraged to keep having a go! ^_^

The old half half :) I had a pastry adventure last week because I needed to make a pie crust for some meat stew I had made the night before and we were all out of the store bought stuff. After I made it, I said "I'm not paying $6 for short crust pastry ever again" :) Too easy!

I'm not a fan of mince pies but they look well-made to me!

I never feel festive until I'm actually in the act of wrapping presents...which is usually in the early hours of Christmas Day morning :) procrastination is evidently a way of life!

Thanks! :-) I used to really hate them at one point but as long as I don't eat loads I quite like them now.

Haha, yes, present wrapping is the most festive thing. Unfortunately I'm usually annoyingly organised about that and have to stop myself doing it too early! I love it in old movies when people go out on Christmas Eve to buy all their presents and this is *normal*. You've probably got the right idea - hopefully it staves off "festivity fatigue"! XD

I'm going to try to emulate your baking prowess and attempt this myself.

Eavesdrop, snoop, and sigh with yearning...

This journal is not a private diary, it is more like an occasional, imaginary column. Therefore, much of it is on public display. However, if you want to read my occasional attempts at creative writing, my Caution Elf tells me I should only show that stuff to my friends. You know what to do. :-)

NB: If you add me in an unsolicited fashion, please introduce yourself. Otherwise I will probably ignore you.
